Dodge cap = bosses stop dodging (26 expertise). Parry cap = they also stop parrying from the front (56). Most DPS stop at the dodge cap.

You have 25 expertise — below the dodge cap. Add ≈ 3 rating to stop dodges, or ≈ 121 to stop parries too.

Advanced: formula & source
Formula expertise = floor(rating / 3.94); dodge/parry removed = expertise × 0.25%

Each expertise skill point removes 0.25% dodge and 0.25% parry from your target. Against a +3 boss the dodge cap is 26 expertise (103 rating) and the parry cap is 56 (221 rating). Parry only applies from the front — most DPS stop at the dodge cap. 3.94 expertise rating = 1 expertise skill.

How TBC expertise works

Expertise reduces the chance your target dodges or parries your attacks. Each point of expertise skill removes 0.25% of both, and 3.94 expertise rating = 1 expertise. Against a +3 boss you need 26 expertise to remove all 6.5% dodge, and 56 to also remove the 14% front parry.

Soft cap vs. hard cap explained

There are two expertise caps, and most players only chase one. The soft cap is the dodge cap: 26 expertise (103 rating) removes all 6.5% of a +3 boss's dodge. Past it, the boss can no longer dodge your attacks — this is where nearly every melee DPS stops. The hard cap is the parry cap: 56 expertise (221 rating) also removes the boss's 14% parry.

The catch: bosses only parry attacks that land from the front, and raid bosses are normally tanked facing away from the group — so DPS standing behind the boss never get parried and gain nothing from pushing past 26. The hard cap only matters for tanks, who hit the boss head-on. That's why "soft" (the practical ceiling for most players) and "hard" (the true mathematical maximum that clears both avoidance types).

Cap Expertise Expertise rating % removed Who needs it
Soft (dodge) 26 103 6.5% All melee DPS
Hard (parry) 56 221 14% Tanks (front only)

Frequently asked questions

What is the expertise cap in TBC?

There are two. Against a +3 raid boss, 26 expertise skill (103 expertise rating) stops the boss dodging your attacks — the "dodge cap". 56 expertise (221 rating) also stops parries — the "parry cap". Each expertise point removes 0.25% dodge and parry, and 3.94 rating = 1 expertise.

Do I need the parry cap?

Usually no. Bosses only parry attacks from the front, and they are normally tanked facing away from melee DPS, so most players only chase the 26-expertise dodge cap. Tanks attacking a boss head-on care about both.

How does expertise rating convert to expertise?

Every 3.94 expertise rating gives 1 point of expertise skill, truncated (not rounded). So 103 rating = 26 expertise, the dodge cap against a +3 boss.

What's the difference between the soft cap and the hard cap?

The soft cap (26 expertise, 103 rating) removes all of a +3 boss’s dodge — past it the boss can’t dodge your attacks. The hard cap (56 expertise, 221 rating) also removes parries. Bosses only parry attacks from the front, and they’re normally tanked facing away from the group, so melee DPS behind the boss never get parried and stop at the soft cap. Tanks hitting the boss head-on are the ones who chase the hard cap.
